Connecticut Attorney Heath D. Harte Comments on Report that Correctional Officer Ignored Prisoner’s Dying Plea

Attorney Heath D. Harte released a statement today commenting on a recent report that a prison guard at New York City’s Rikers Island is being charged with violating the civil rights of an inmate who died after allegedly begging for medical help from his cell.

Heath D. Harte, an attorney-at-law with over twenty-five years of experience practicing in Connecticut and New York, released a statement today commenting on a recent report that a correctional officer has come under investigation for his role in the death of an inmate who died after allegedly begging for medical help from his cell.

According to a report from http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/25/nyregion/correction-officer-charged-with-indifference-in-death-of-rikers-island-inmate.html?smid=pl-share [the New York Times] (U.S. Accuses Rikers Officer of Ignoring Dying Plea, 3/24/2014), a correctional officer at New York’s Rikers Island State Penitentiary has been accused by the FBI with violating the civil rights of an inmate who died despite allegedly begging for medical treatment for hours from inside of his cell. According to the report, the criminal complaint filed against the correctional officer alleges that he ignored warnings from subordinates who told him that the prisoner was in distress and needed aid.

“This case is indicative of a sad epidemic in our prison system,” said Heath D. Harte. “All too often, cases like these where a possible violation of a person’s civil rights has occurred come to light after the damage has already been done. Anyone who is incarcerated needs to realize that despite their predicament, they still have rights that must be respected. If someone feels that their rights have been violated during a period of incarceration, they should seek help from a qualified attorney immediately.”
